Hay Park / Buzzard Basin Volunteer Project

August 22 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Project Description: Join us for one day of trail restoration and maintenance work in the Hay Park area. Volunteers will work to restore a non-system Wilderness trail to its natural state and also focus on improvement work on the Buzzard Basin trail.  Please note that this project has been changed from a backpacking trip to a single-day volunteer project.

The restoration work will close off a trail that branches to the south from the main Hay Park Trail and heads into the Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness (where bikes are not allowed).   The improvement work on Buzzard Basin Trail will install a sign at the north end of the trail, improve the initial tread to make it’s location obvious, add way-finding posts at key locations in the northern portions of the trail, and of course we’ll perform some basic tread and corridor maintenance where it’s needed most.   For a bigger picture understanding of RFMBA’s ongoing advocacy work in the Hay Park area, check out this article we recently published.

Directions: Registered participants will be provided with detailed directions within one week of the project date. Volunteer work will begin approximately 3.5 miles from the Dinkle Lake / Thomas Lakes trailhead.  Please register online for the event at this link.

What to bring: Please bring a daypack, sunscreen, clothing layers, rain gear, bug repellent, 3 liters of water, snacks, work gloves, and a sack lunch to eat on the trail.

When: Plan on 8am – 5pm, but this timing will likely be updated closer to the project day.

RFMBA is partnering on this project with the US Forest Service, Wilderness Workshop, Roaring Fork Valley Horse Council, and Capitol Peak Outfitters.  This and other efforts are a part of RFMBA’s long term advocacy of the area to the benefit of local and visiting mountain bikers, and stewardship of the area to ensure future generations of riders will also enjoy the beauty of this place.
