Wulfsohn Mountain Open Space arose from a 215-acre parcel of land dedicated to the City of Glenwood Springs by the developers of the Glenwood Meadows Shopping Center in 2002. The open space stretches from the Glenwood Springs Community Center and the new apartment buildings above the shopping center to just above the roundabout at the West Glenwood / I-70 exit. After a public planning process, an initial trail plan was developed for the site leading to the start of construction by RFOV in 2006. Since that time RFOV has conducted numerous projects on the site. Hundreds of volunteers have helped build this trail system with more than 5-miles of singletrack trail.
The area has become quite popular as it provides many who live or work in Glenwood Springs with a convenient area for a run, hike or bike ride. Another attractive feature of this trail system is that unlike all the other trails in Glenwood, you don’t have to start off with a steep climb to enjoy the trails!
This year’s project will have a few components, with the main effort going to building another 2/3 mile of single track and increasing the number of loop options available to the users. We will be building a new trail between the gravel section of the main Wulfsohn Trail and the large containment basin with a connection from the southwest corner of the property to the Upper Loop Trail. We’ll also be doing a little work to improve the trail and mitigate erosion issues near the community garden.
